The « Like a Red Prison » performance was the first time when we escaped the borders of Moscow and went on tour occupying oil facilities all over our country.

In keeping with best traditions of feminist political punk, each occupation of an oil facility, like some oil pump in a distant region of Russia, started with a breakthrough.
Before the breakthrough the Pussy Riot members carrying punk-feminist flags, musical instruments and equipment hid in the heath waiting until the security guard patrol (like the Rosneft one) went away far enough to allow for the successful occupation of the oil pump.
After occupying the pump a special portrait was immediately put on it. For example, a portrait of the head of Investigation Committee of Russia, Colonel General Bastrykin, known to the Pussy Riot activists for his liking to sign orders of arrest for our friends dissatisfied with the fact that nobody besides Putin feels these 200 billion oil dollars.
After hanging out the portrait they put feminists flags waving above the pump: all friends of Mr. Putin as well as Mr. Putin himself are evil fucking sexists (as one of our song’s lines says) who believe that the state and power is built upon oppression of women, LGBTQI communities, atheists and other social groups. Shortly after that they started playing punk rock.

When some stupid pipe was on the way of a breakthrough, the bravest of us, Grelka, took her sledge-hammer and running in front of this feminists’ breakthrough crushed the obstacle.
After occupying the 14th oil pump in a third Russian region in a row we took some rest because we got an urgent telegram from the Mordovian prison #14. Tolokno was writing to us!
Having read the Tolokno’s telegram, we rushed to occupy even more important oil objects with increased power — as Marx taught us and as Tolokno wrote us, the fight for the values starts with fighting for the economical basis.

The Cossacks were employed by the Tsarist regime for vicious attacks against any dissent from anyone – peasants, workers, intellectuals, narodniks. Cossack troops were involved in major massacres which preceded the 1905 and 1917 revolutions, and other massacres in other rebellions in Russian history before that. In short, they have been a traditional instrument of state repression in Russia, opposed to every progressive force which has ever arisen there. In pre-Bolshevik Russia and Ukraine the Cossacks were much feared, and hated.
The Cossacks bitterly opposed the Bolshevik Revolution, providing the bulk of troops for the southern wing of the White (Tsarist) armies, led by Wrangel, Denikin, and Kutpetov. While I am no fan of the Bolsheviks, once the Bolsheviks won, the era of tribally-based Cossack terror was over. The Cossacks are back, like many other regressive forces in Russia, now that the progressive element of Soviet socialism is gone. Putin, as is well known, has essentially re-built the Russian Orthodox Church, and also urged them to decree Tsar Nicholas II (and his family) saints. You heard that right – Nicholas was probably one of the most stupid and incompetent people to ‘rule’ Imperial Russia, but he is now a saint because Putin wanted that. In addition, the Russian government has funded a number of films to create a new (fake) history about the « heroes » of the White Tsarist armies who fought against Bolshevism.
All of this is part of a general cultural, political and economic retrograde motion we are seeing all over the world, including the United States. Ukraine is about to be taken over in a violent revolt by the Svoboda party, who are unabashed fascists, who have literally re-instituted the pogrom mindset, and literally paint swastikas on their chests (even though the Nazis wiped out about 1 to 2 million innocent Ukrainians per year during 1941 – 1944). Where this motion will end, no one can say for sure. But Pussy Riot, as a progressive force, can be noble in their resistance to it. No one should be surprised, however, if they end up dead or imprisoned forever. This retrograde motion isn’t some game, or a passing phase. It is a deep and thoroughgoing phenomenon – the capitalist states around the world are essentially turning back the clock and pulling back the progressive advances of the age of Enlightenment (things like Free Speech and Right to Assembly). It is very generally a sign of the desperate decay of the capitalist system.

Incidentally, the weapon used by the Cossacks in the video is a variant of the Knout, a traditional weapon used against prisoners by prison guards – and also to inflict a physical sentence.
